Don Lane to be remembered as a much-loved entertainer

The chief executive officer of Alzheimer’s Australia New South Wales (NSW), John Watkins, said Don Lane would be remembered as a great entertainer who was much-loved across Australia.

“Our sincere sympathies go to Don Lane’s family and friends,” Mr Watkins said.

“Today’s memorial is an appropriate way for his family, friends and the community to celebrate the life of an entertainer who was so well-known and greatly respected.”

Mr Watkins said Alzheimer’s Australia NSW appreciated the invitation to be a part of the celebration at South Sydney Juniors Club of Don Lane’s life.

“His passing shows dementia can impact on anybody – rich or poor, well-known or not,” Mr Watkins said.

“It also reminds us of the growing challenge of dementia. It is fast becoming the most significant health challenge facing Australia.

“It is a progressive and fatal illness, but it is important to remember that individuals diagnosed with dementia have lives to lead.”

Mr Watkins said Don Lane was not alone in his illness.

“Currently there are more than 240,000 Australians with dementia, and that number will grow quickly as we age as a community,” he said.

“Before too long we will all know people who have dementia or are caring for someone with the illness.”
