Doctors need more education on hip fractures and osteoporosis
An ACT study has shown that medical practitioners often overlook osteoporosis – before and even after an osteoporotic fracture occurs in an elderly patient- suggesting that much more education is needed to prevent and treat hip fractures.
This ignorance is occurring despite the availability of anti osteoporotic treatment which could prevent fractures, according to the report in theAustralasian Journal of Ageing.
The need for understanding and appropriate treatment is intensified , according to the report’s authors, in the light of an expected dramatic increase in the number of hip fractures in the rapidly growing and ageing Australian population.
