Dig into gardening for a mind-body workout

Looking for a new mind-body exercise? It’s right in your own backyard.

Gardening not only relaxes the mind, it gives the body a pretty good workout, too. Hauling and spreading mulch and soil, moving plants and shrubs, and raking and digging will break a sweat and strengthen muscles and bones at the same time. Reaching or bending to weed or plant is great for increasing flexibility.

Studies show that being in nature has a soothing effect on the mind and body, relieving stress and lowering blood pressure. Benefits of gardening include fresh vegetables and fruit, flowers and vitamin D from the sun. Mentally it gives a sense of purpose to those suffering grief or recovering from illnesses, a social outlet with neighbourly interaction.

Health and safety tips

· Respect the weather – wear sunscreen and protective clothing if spending more than just a few minutes outdoors and have a drink handy to prevent dehydration

· Dress to protect from the sun and hazards, including safe shoes and goggles to protect eyes

· Prepare for physical activity- stretch before gardening

· Watch your back when bending, lifting and carrying, or even mowing, and mind your posture

· Take breaks, especially during reptetitive activity

. Follow instructions with chemicals or equipment, and put them away to avoid tripping over them
