Diabetes on rise

The rate of people being admitted to hospital with diabetes is increasing according to a new report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
The report looked at trends in diabetes-related hospitalisations using hospital statistics over the period 1996-07 to 2003-04. The study shows that between 2000 and 2004, hospital admissions for diabetes increased by 20%.
The rates of hospitalisation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are more than seven times that of other Australians.
