Deadly flu in ACT aged care bolsters push for immunisation
ACT health authorities have confirmed the strain of influenza which killed eight people at a Canberra nursing home is the same as the one circulating in the general community.
The Territory Health Department says the virus is the H3N2 type, which is covered by the 2006 flu vaccine.
The Australian Health Protection Committee is expected to consider the lessons of the recent influenza outbreak at the nursing home. The ACT has already called on the Commonwealth to consider making the flu injection a prerequisite for accreditation of aged care homes.
