While some sufferers may forget appropriate public behaviour, others may undress, use vulgar words or act sexually aggressive.
Caregivers are urged to remember the changes in sexual behaviour are not reflections on their loved one’s character – but rather, they are symptoms of the disease.
Understanding the cause of the behaviour and seeking medical evaluations for a person showing either excessive or no interest in sex is important.
Exploring possible reasons for sexual displays or inappropriate or aggressive advances are important, as well as understanding your loved one may simply crave affection or affirmation.
Experts encourage caregivers of those with Alzheimer’s who display aggressive sexual behaviour to:
- Avoid overreacting or expressing shock
- Avoid becoming angry or arguing
- Don’t shame or ridicule the person
- Gently remind the person when behaviour is inappropriate
- Remember to be a sensitive and reassuring
