The researchers have shown that blocking a molecule, called GM-CSF, suppresses pain in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis in lab models.
Previously, the scientists proved that blocking the same molecule suppressed the development of rheumatoid arthritis.
The GM-CSF molecule acts as a messenger between cells at an inflammation site.
“Without a doubt, quality of life and to be free from pain are important issues for people suffering with arthritis related conditions,” researcher, Professor John Hamilton, says.
His co-researcher, Dr Andrew Cook, adds osteoarthritis is a common condition impacting more on the community – especially the ageing population.
“A new therapy that can block such painful conditions would have massive benefits for health providers and governments in the future,” he says.
