Colorectal keyhole surgery speeds recovery

Mackay (Queensland) patients can now access keyhole colorectal surgery to speed up their recovery times and reduce the risk of infection.
Mackay Base Hospital director of surgery, Dr Nils Wagner, who performs the laparoscopic surgery, says it significantly decreases the size of the scar and pain experienced after the operation and hastens patients’ return to their homes and workplaces.
Colorectal surgery treats medical conditions ranging from incontinence to complex inflammatory bowel disease and bowel cancer.
However, Mackay Base Hospital will focus on treating inflammatory bowel disease and bowel cancer of the colon.
