Cola – osteoporosis possible link
Older women at risk of osteoporosis should avoid cola as it may help to reduce bone mineral density.
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has reported that a dietary survey showed that in women, but not men, drinking cola – whether standard, diet or decaffeinated – was linked to lower bone mineral density. This was regardless of other factors such as age, menopausal status, total calcium and vitamin D intake or use of cigarettes or alcohol.
The more cola that was drunk, the lower the bone mineral density. The authors believe that the phosphoric acid in cola, which is not found in other fizzy drinks, may promote the bone loss.
