Coffee used to attack Alzheimer’s
Being a heavy coffee drinker may actually help your brain protect itself from Alzheimer’s disease and in fact help treat symptoms that might appear, according to a new American study.
University of Florida researcher, Gary Arendash, said that the study “gives evidence that caffeine may be a viable treatment for established Alzheimer’s disease and not simple a protective strategy”.
Using mice which had developed Alzheimer’s in the experiment, the university team fed half of the laboratory animals a heavy diet of caffeine once they had seen signs of the disease. Subsequently the mice that had been fed the caffeine performed much better on memory tests than those that had not received caffeine.
Gary Arendash said the university team was now keen to hold clinical trials with people because it was believed caffeine appeared to directly attack Alzheimer’s, was safe for most people, and easily absorbed by the brain.
