Churches makes submissions to Australian Fair Pay Commission

Professor Ian Harper
The major churches have called for fairness and the maintenance of living standards to be key factors in setting minimum wages, in submissions to the Australian Fair Pay Commission as it makes its first determination.
The Anglican Church (plus Anglicare and the Brotherhood of St Laurence), the Australian Catholic Council for Employment Relations and United Care all made separate submissions.
The Commission is chaired by economist Professor Ian Harper who is also a prominent Anglican.
A former director of the Industries Assistance Commission who is now the Anglican Bishop of Tasmania, John Harrower, has said in his submission that the Christian tradition imposed mutual obligations of a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay.
