Chicks rule the roost at Villa Maria

The joy of watching new life emerge from cracking shells is fascinating residents at Victoria's Villa Maria Berwick.

Fourteen chicks have now hatched from their cosy, temporary home at the Avebury Drive aged care residence, following the delivery of eggs in a brooding pen on earlier this month from the Henny Penny Hatching program.

Villa Maria Berwick lifestyle coordinator, Carolyn Buckley, says residents and staff alike had eagerly anticipated the arrival of the chicks, following the program’s first visit last year.

“The residents have loved to sit and watch the chicks as they’ve hatched from their shells.  Interacting with and holding the chicks has provided a great sensory experience, particularly for residents living with dementia,” Ms Buckley says.

“And many of the residents have been reminiscing about their childhoods when they collected eggs from chickens at home, bringing back happy memories.”

Ms Buckley says some of the chicks would find permanent homes with staff members, while others would be rehomed by the hatching program.
