Check your hearing early
Around 60% of Australians over 60 and 70% over 70 have some form of hearing loss. Part of the problem is that most people wait from six to 10 years before attending to any hearing impairment, with people trying to hide the problem for as long as possible.
The acting Australian Hearing managing director, Steven Grundy, said that “people with a hearing impairment disengage socially and they avoid busy or noisy environments, they don’t talk, and this all leads to depression”.
“As a person’s communication abilities diminish it affects their quality of life and frustrates family, friends, carers, and loved ones. It is important that people go out and get tested and, if they need to, find out about the latest hearing aids available,” Mr.Grundy said.
Australian Hearing now has a range of aids which feature discreet, personally designed hearing aids which adjust volume automatically according to the level of noise in the environment. Most Australian age pensioners are entitled to free or subsidised hearing services and can get further information on 13 17 97.
