Australians considering a ‘granny flat’ arrangement as living circumstances change can become eligible for rent assistance from Centrelink where the proposed granny flat interest can apply if people have contributed money or other valuable assets in exchange even if the flat belongs to somebody else.
The value of this granny flat interest will be used by Centrelink to determine the person’s homeowner status and eligibility for rent assistance.
