Fairfax reports a spokesperson from the Department of Health and Ageing claims the reform will bring cheaper prices for different strengths of 63 drugs.
Expected to save the government about $1.9 billion over four years, the reforms will see prices in drugs to treat cholesterol, blood pressure and diabetes medications reduce dramatically.
According to The Australian, the price of commonly used 40mg simvastatin pills used to lower cholesterol will fall by 55% from $42.77 to $22.68.
