Centenarian excels at Masters’ Games
Brisbane’s 100-year-old, Ruth Frith, has won gold at the 7th Masters’ Games in Sydney, with a shot put of 4.07 metres. She had no competition in her 100-104 year old category, but competes for the fun, thrill and recognition she gets for her fantastic sporting prowess.
She is also competing in three other field events, along with 28,000 competitors from 95 countries now in Sydney for the international event. The youngest Australian competitor is 24 years old.
The games, with the slogan, Fit Fun Forever Young, are about promoting good health among seniors, and competitors compete against others in their age group – as well as the clock.
Ruth Frith’s throw rivalled that of competitors decades younger than her, and set a new world record for her age group. She trained hard for her events, putting in the hard yards five days a week and bench pressing 35kg weights.
Other younger competitors included Coca Cola Amatil’s Australian chief, Terry Davis, who represented Australia in the men’s rowing team for his age group.
