Census confirms Adelaide’s rapidly ageing status
Census figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics have highlighted Adelaide’s ageing population.
Data from the 2006 census show that of all Australian capital cities, Adelaide has the highest proportion of people aged over 75 and the lowest proportion of children aged four and under.
Adelaide also recorded the highest proportion of couples with no dependent children, a further indication the city’s residents are getting older.
More than one million people live in Adelaide, almost three quarters of South Australia’s total population.
The figures also show about a quarter of Adelaide’s residents were born overseas.
