Liberal Senator for Tasmania, David Bushby, is encouraging Tasmanians – young and old – to celebrate the contributions of the elderly.

Attending the official state launch of Seniors Week last week in Launceston, organised by Council on the Ageing (COTA), Senator Bushby says it is important Tasmania’s 114,500 seniors are recognised for the vital role they have played in the community and continue to do so.

“Our senior citizens are a valuable asset and deserve to be treated with the upmost respect. This includes ensuring they are provided with the best of care and services to ensure a first-rate quality of life as they age,” Senator Bushby says.

Tasmania reportedly has the highest proportion of seniors in the country, with a median age that is rising.

“It’s no wonder ‘mainlanders’ are choosing Tasmania to spend their golden years but it’s important to ensure we have the services to handle the influx, both now and into the future,” Senator Bushby says.

“As our ageing population grows, services will be put under even further pressure unless we act now.”

The state also reportedly has a higher than national average occupancy rate across all aged care service types.

“Unfortunately for Tasmanians, despite the federal government’s promises of aged care reform, there is very little evidence of change.

“The Government’s Living Longer Living Better package is more about means-testing, creating red tape hurdles and shuffling funding from one area to another than substantial reform.”

Senator Bushby claims after five years of Labor neglect, the aged care sector needs urgent change to provide viable and effective services for older Australians.

“The Coalition is committed to the delivery of a high quality, affordable and accessible aged care scheme that meets the needs and preference of older Australians.

“We believe those who have contributed so much to the building of our country should receive the care they deserve, whether in the community or in residential aged care.”

Senator Bushby also pays tribute to those Tasmanians that work in the aged care sector, thanking them for their dedication to seniors.
