Causes Of Death Report Released
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released a report on causes of deaths in Australia in 2005. The report showed that there were fewer deaths in 2005 than in 2004, with the Northern Territory recording the highest standardised death rate and the ACT the lowest.
Malignant neoplasms were the largest cause of death, representing 29.4% of all deaths. This was followed by Ischaemic heart disease, responsible for 18.0% of deaths.
Suicide accounted for 1.6 per cent, or 2,101, of all deaths, down slightly from 2004. The suicide rate for men dropped slightly between 2004 and 2005 but was still four times the rate in women.
