Carers will be in greater demand than nurses and doctors combined in the next five years.

Federal Department of Education Employment and Workplace Relation figures show Australia will need an additional 112,600 carers by 2016, including carers for the aged, those with disabilities and children.

However, carers will not be the only ones in demand with the data indicating an additional 85,000 doctors and nurses will be needed, as well as 125,000 medical and allied health professionals.

But it is the ageing population which will reportedly account for most of the demand for new carers, with the number of people aged 65 years projected to increase from 3.12 million this year to 3.75 million by 2016.

There has also been a warning that, in the next 10 years, the number of people requiring care may be greater than the number of people able to provide the care.
