Carers Week 19-25 October

Carers Week runs from 19-25 October. This year’s theme is ‘…because I care’, chosen to explore the impact of caring on individuals and society. Below is a full list of the events happening in NSW during Carers Week.

Candles Cancer Support Group Inc: Thank you carers morning tea and relaxing hand massage. An open invitation to all carers. Date:  22 October. Time: 10am – 12noon. Venue: Family Support Centre, Kanwal. Bookings essential. Phone (02) 4393 5017.

Eloura – Blue Mountains Disability Services Ltd: Free ‘Securing the Future’ seminar.  Date: 23 October, Time: 12noon –  4.30pm, Venue: Springwood Sports Club,  Springwood. The speakers are:  Mr Stephen Booth, partner, Coleman & Grieg and co-author of Special Disability Trusts: Getting Things Sorted and Mr Mark MacDiarmid, principal solicitor, Elizabeth Event Community Legal Centre.  RSVP to Leila on (02) 4751 5266, ext. 255.

Far North Coast Respite and Carelink Centre:  Morning tea cruise on the Richmond River. Date: 21 October. Time: 10.00am to 12 noon Departs: Regatta Avenue, Ballina and returns there. RSVP: 15 October 2008.
 
Morning Tea Cruise on the Tweed River to Tumbulgum: Date: 22 October. Time: 9.30 am to 11.30am. Departs: Tweed Marina, River Terrace, Tweed Heads (return by bus to Tweed Marina) RSVP: 15 October 2008.
 
Morning tea cruise on the Clarence River:  Date: 23 October. Time: 10.00 am to 12 noon. Departs: Iluka Marina and returns to Marina. RSVP: by 15 October on 1800 052 222. Transport and respite can be arranged.

Great Lakes Neighbour Aid: Dementia Carers Support Group and Generalist Carers Support Group Carers Photo Speak exhibition. Date: 21 October – 25 October. Venue: Great Lakes Library, Breese Parade, Forster.

Inner West Disability Network: Free lunch with guest speaker, Cheryl Koenig, author of Paper Cranes: A Mother’s Story of Hope, Courage and Determination. Date: 25 October. Time: 10.30am to 1.30pm. Venue: Burwood RSL, 96 Shaftesbury Rd, Burwood. RSVP by 15 October, to Elizabeth Graves, Strathfield Council (02) 9748 9912.

Hornsby – Upper North Shore region: Carers lunch with speaker, Cheryl Koenig who is a carer and who recently launched the story of her family’s journey in a book called, Paper Cranes: A Mother’s Story of Hope, Courage and Determination.  Date: 24 October. Venue: Epping Learning and Leisure Centre, 1 Chambers Court off Pembroke Street under Epping Library.   Time: 10.30am finishing around 2.00pm.  Clearly leave your name and details at (02) 8877 5118 to book. You can take it as confirmed that you have a place booked. We will only get back to you if we need to.

Willoughby LNS Area: A carers lunch for those on the lower north shore. Hear Cheryl Koenig, author of Paper Cranes: A Mother’s Story of Hope, Courage and Determination. Date: 22 October. Time: Commencing 12 noon till around 2.30pm. Venue: Dougherty Centre, Chatswood. Ryde Hunters Hill Gladesville region: Carers morning tea – all welcome, drop in any time. Date: 27 October. Time: 9.30 till 12noon Venue: Northern Sydney NSCCHealth Carer Support Service.

On Track Community Programs – Coffs Harbour: Opening of new respite cottage. Date: 24 October. Venue: 25 18th Avenue, Sawtell. Time: 11am – 2pm. RSVP 17 October to Valinda (02) 6658 7216.

Orana Region: Carers ANYbody ANYtime Expo 2008 – Over 40 exhibitors. Presentations: Navigating the Maze of Services, Managing Medications in the Home; Guardianship, Enduring Power of Attorney and Wills; Nutrition for Carers – Looking after You; Caring for Carers: Dealing with Loss – Issues for Carers. Shoalhaven Carer Support Services Network: Carers day out Shoalhaven – morning tea and lunch provided. Guest speaker – Tania Hayes plus entertainment, gentle exercise, relaxation and singing. South Eastern Sydney and Illawarra Health: Carers Day – in partnership with the Illawarra Carer Respite and Carelink Centre and the Your Time Carer Counselling Service: Guest speaker-Tania Hayes (Ambassador for Carers Australia, and author of Love Has No Limits). Date: 21 October. Time: 9.30am to 2.00pm. Venue: Illawarra Yacht Club, 1 Northcliff Drive, Warrawong. 

Tamworth Carers Support Group: Carers Wellness Day.  Speakers on reflexology, anger management and positive attitudes. Free massages and lunch and morning tea supplied. Date: 15 October. Venue: Tamworth Community Centre. Time: 10am to 2pm.  Contact Kerry Little on (02) 6766 4480 to make a booking.
