There is pressure to put new ways of treating cancer with radiation on Medicare but not enough evidence to be sure they are worth it.
A world leading Australian research group is setting up a system to help the Government decide. Over half of all people with cancer could benefit from radiotherapy.
“It’s a very effective treatment which aims to get the highest possible dose of radiation into susceptible tumours and the lowest possible dose into the normal tissue around them,” said Professor Bryan Burmeister, president of the Trans Tasman Radiation Oncology Group (TROG), which has been awarded a $3 million project by the Federal Government.
