Calls for WA Grandparents Day

Western Australia should follow the lead of New South Wales and Queensland in establishing its own Grandparents Day.
Western Australia’s State Opposition last week said the increasingly important and diverse roles grandparents play should be recognised with a special day in their honour.
Opposition leader Mark McGowan said many grandparents perform the role of parents to the grandchildren “so it’s a good idea to acknowledge them and such a day would recognise the broad role they play in our society”.
“I would hope the State Government wouldn’t oppose it but if they do, it will be our election promise at the next election.
“It would be a very simple thing to put in place, via a simple Act of Parliament, it wouldn’t cost anything and what you’d do is create a culture in this state that values older West Australians and grandparents and the valuable role they perform,” he said.
According to Mr McGowan, Grandparents Day should be celebrated on the last Sunday in October.
Premier Colin Barnett also supported the proposal, stating he did not have any objection to the state day dedicated to grandparents.
“I don’t think it should be enshrined in legislation but if that grows through custom I think that is a fair suggestion,” he said.
