Brisbane trials 24 hour a day nostalgia radio service

Silver Memories is a new 24 hour a day nostalgia radio service created to address social isolation in aged care facilities and the community.

It  provides music from the 1920’s to the 1950’s, musicals, popular ballads of the past, features on the great stars of stage and screen.

Birthday greetings and well wishes are also sent to listeners, requests played and favourite poems read.

Silver Memories is produced and presented by the not-for-profit community radio station 4MBS Classic FM – Brisbane’s award winning fine music radio station now in its 30th year on air.

Silver Memories is streamed on the 4MBS website, so it is available throughout Australia.

Operated by volunteers and a staff member, Silver Memories is currently supported by philanthropic and government grants.

In Brisbane, the service can also be heard on specially tuned radios available from 4MBS.

The service has been undergoing a 12 month trial at selected aged care facilities in Brisbane in conjunction with the Australasian Centre on Ageing.

The results have been very positive – one example involves a resident suffering from depression, she was given a Silver Memories radio and now looks forward to listening each day and has even resumed her knitting.
