Brisbane seniors part of City Council election promises
The provision of aged care in the suburbs is becoming an election issue in the lead-up to the Brisbane City Council elections which will be held on 15 March.
Lord Mayor Campbell Newman pledged to establish a retirement and aged care taskforce if re-elected.
The taskforce would focus on ways to allow older people to remain in the same neighbourhood if moving to an aged care facility or retirement village.
“Brisbane’s older residents should be able to grow old in the communities that have housed them all their lives,” Councillor Newman said.
He said there were only about 28,000 high-level aged care places in Queensland, with another 5,000 required in the next three years.
