‘Big ideas’ in health

Aged care, the social determinants in health, disconnects between primary and hospital care and early childhood development are topics that will challenge delegates at next week’s National Primary Health Care Conference in Adelaide.

Four ‘Grand Challenges’ will bring together some of the country’s leading thinkers and strategists in the primary health care sector to develop the ‘big ideas’ that have the potential to change the health system for the better.

AML Alliance Transitional chief executive, Leanne Wells, says the aim of the Grand Challenges is to create a frank and honest discussion about what is needed to improve the health system across the four areas.

“Delegates will brainstorm solutions to the ‘wicked’ problems that are currently hindering improvements to the health system,” Ms Wells says.

Grand Challenge questions to be posed to participants:

  • How do we stop patients falling through the cracks when they go from hospital care back into the community? What can Medicare Locals and Local Hospital Networks do together to better connect the system?
  • What will it take to get aged care reform to the next step?
  • The social determinants of health: what can Medicare Locals do?

Stay tuned next week for DPS News reporting on the National Primary Health Care Conference – Healthy Communities, Healthy Nation, From Transition to Action: Integrating Primary Health and Social Care.
