Tai chi and qigong are becoming increasingly popular among the over 50s. These mind-body exercises comprise a series of slow, rhythmic movements, deep breathing and mental concentration.
Sports Medicine Australia and the Department of Health and Ageing recommends tai chi for older adults.
A recent study, published in the Western Journal of Nursing Research, found consistent benefits for strength, balance, fear of falling, functional fitness, blood pressure and stiff or painful joints.
The results for number of falls, body mass index, cholesterol, bone density and depression, however, were mixed, with some studies reporting benefits and others reporting no change.
