Be aware of ATM safety

Seniors are being reminded to take safety measures when they are withdrawing money from ATMs.

Older people are being encouraged to go with a friend or relative when making an ATM withdrawal; to make small withdrawals (so if money is lost it is minimised) and be mindful of any unwanted presence near an ATM.

The Australian Bankers’ Association (ABA) also has a few tips on ATM safety.

It says people should minimise their time at the ATM by having their card ready when they approach a machine and if they feel uncomfortable, they should go to another branch or use an off–street ATM in a bank lobby.

The ABA also recommends that once completing an ATM transaction, people should put their money away immediately and leave.
