Baptists score free land for low-cost housing in ACT

Canberra’s inner south is to get a 160-bed aged care centre on the site of the former O’Connell Education Centre in Griffith.

Baptist Community Services will receive the land, valued at about $1.8 million, in exchange for providing a portion of low-cost accommodation in the redevelopment of its Morling Lodge site in Hicks Street, Red Hill.

Chief executive officer of Baptist Community Services, June Heinrich, said the plan was to build the 160-bed centre at Griffith, then to transfer the 103 residents from Morling Lodge.

The lodge, opened in 1968, would then be demolished and replaced by a retirement village with 100  two and three-bedroom adaptable apartments and a community centre.
