Baby boomers boost the sex industry
The increasing sexual liberalisation of society – especially for women – will lead to a complete change in the people using sex services, according to recent IBIS World research.
In the past the sex trade has been driven by younger men visiting brothels or using escort services but future growth will come from the older generation. The research suggested that Internet sites promoting free sexual liaisons between strangers would give increased competition to traditional prostitution.
IBIS World Australian general manager, Jason Baker, said that “currently men over 55 contribute just 10% of industry revenue, with women making up 8%. We predict an increase in the number of women not only paying for sexual services but visiting strip clubs and accessing sexual material via the telephone, Internet, pay TV and DVD”.
“Baby boomers will put boom-boom back into the sex industry,” he said.
Each year Australians make up to 16 million visits to an estimated 20,000 sex workers. There are more than 5,000 legal brothels, escort agencies, and sexual massage services, and up to 2,000 illegal outfits.
