Australians can research Scottish past
Ancestry.com.au has launched its mid-Victorian Scottish Censuses collection – making available more than a million searchable names for the full 1841,1851, and 1861 Scottish censuses.
With more than two million Australians claiming Scottish ancestry, including Princess Mary of Denmark, Magda Szubanski, Heath Ledger and Rupert Murdoch, this new collection will provide an invaluable resource to professional genealogists and amateur family historians keen to research their Scottish heritage.
The Ancestry Scotland Censuses is the first online collection of Scottish censuses that can be searched by occupation, allowing an insight into societal trends. The impact of the industrial revolution, moves to the main cities and overcrowding shown in the records help explain why so many Scots emigrated to Australia during the mid 19th century. Upon arrival in Australia most Scots returned to the land.
