Australian men – fat and depressed
A South Australian study of men’s health has found that half of the men surveyed between the ages of 35 and 80 were officially overweight, a further 30% were obese and only one in five was of ‘normal’ weight.
The Florey Adelaide Male Ageing Study found that 16% had diabetes Type 2, 12% were depressed , 9% suffered from anxiety and the same proportion had asthma.
Further findings included about 6.5% with angina, 10% with osteoarthritis and 5% with rheumatoid arthritis. Ten percent of the men have had cancer at some stage in their life.
The study of the 1200 men showed a clear relationship between social disadvantage and poor health: low income levels were linked with anxiety, obesity and diabetes, while depression was associated with income, employment and marital status.
