Australia ranked 2nd for quality of death

Research undertaken by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) reveals the United Kingdom (UK) is the best place to die.

By devising a Quality of Death Index, EIU ranked countries according to their provision of end-of-life care, rating Australia second out of the 40 countries investigated.

According to the Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance, while more than 100 million patients and family care givers worldwide need palliative care annually, less than 8% of this number actually receives it.

The UK was best in terms of its hospice care network, statutory involvement in end-of-life care, public awareness and traning.

The top 10 were as follows;

  • UK
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Ireland
  • Belgium
  • Austria
  • Netherlands
  • Germany
  • Canada
  • United States

The bottom ten included India, Brazil, China and Russia.
