Anglican Diocese of Brisbane’s St John’s Home for Aged Men at Toowong recently celebrated 80 years of care.
Residents and staff at the home were joined by relatives, friends and supporters to celebrate the milestone marked last month.
A highlight of the day was a celebratory liturgy led by Archbishop Dr Phillip Aspinall, who shared and drew parallels with the vision of the home’s founders and benefactors leading to its establishment in 1932 on land donated by the Moxon family.
Local state MP, Saxon Rice, shared some of the other milestones of that year, including the construction of the Grey Street Bridge and the passing of champion racehorse, Phar Lap.
Federal MP, Jane Prentice; Rob Law, chairman of the Community Services Commission; and Kathy Corbiere, Anglicare executive director, were also present at the celebrations.
Among the numerous guests were Marjorie and Royce Voss, who has a room named in his honour at St John’s.
Mr Voss recalled his time working at the home, including paying staff in cash using envelopes.
During the celebration, a plaque was blessed by Dr Aspinall to mark the 80 years of service of St John’s to the Brisbane community.
