Alzheimer’s disease breakthrough closer

Food rich in antioxidants
Alzheimer’s Australia has welcomed the findings of American neurologist Professor Marilyn Albert that developments in drug technology could mean an effective treatment for Alzheimer’s disease may be only a decade away.
Professor Albert, from John Hopkins University, says that work was well advanced in developing a new generation of drugs that could target and destroy the amyloid plaque which formed in the brain and caused the crippling disease.
She was in Australia to speak at Dementia Awareness Month activities. Professor Albert spoke highly of Alzheimer’s Australia’s ‘Mind tour Mind’ program which is aimed at baby boomers – especially those in the 40 to 50 age group – and concentrates on staying fit, eating food which is rich in antioxidants, and keeping mentally and socially active.
