Ageing well is imperative

The aged care system is reportedly “buckling”, a group of industry organisations claim after yesterday’s (Sunday 29 January 2012) launch of the Australians Deserve to Age Well campaign.

The campaign will encourage Australians to share the challenges they have experienced in the aged care system.

Calling for the urgent need for reform, a coalition of 28 groups, including health professionals, unions and charitable organisations, have formed an alliance in the hope of bringing about change.

The Australians Deserve to Age Well website highlights the importance of having consumers understand the information and services available to them.

“If you’ve ever tried to access aged care services for yourself or family, you’ll know the system can be a minefield,” the website states.

“It’s hard to know where to start; it is inconsistent and very complicated. In-home support services are extremely limited and residential care is based on arbitrary ratios – not demand.”

More than 3.5 million Australians are expected to use aged care services each year by 2050. This is more than a threefold increase on the system.
