Aged care job losses sweep through Christchurch

Aged care workers are among the biggest losers so far in a wave of job losses following the Christchurch earthquakes, according to a report in The Star.
Hundreds of elderly rest home residents have been sent out of Christchurch because their facilities are uninhabitable, leaving some 800 aged care workers without jobs, at least temporarily.
Service and Food Workers Union aged care spokesman, Chas Muir, said seven Christchurch rest homes or retirement complexes “didn’t survive the earthquake”.
Mr Muir told The Star that had cost at least 800 jobs. He said not all aged care staff were union members, but the union was “supporting all workers” in the sector.
