Senator Rachel Siewert, Greens spokesperson for Ageing, said Senate Estimates hearings have highlighted the inadequacies of our current aged care system and the need for administrative reform.
Senator Siewert said that the systemic failures of Australia’s aged care sector appear to be at their worst in Western Australia – as highlighted by the alarmingly high rate of aged care bed licences being handed back to the Government.
She said that 17% of aged care bed licences returned in the past three years have been in WA, despite the state receiving only 9% of aged care bed allocations overall, and there is a need for more information on where and why these licences are being returned.
