A new ‘miracle’ Alzheimer’s treatment

It is known as an antiseptic, AIDS cure, anti-infective, cholesterol-basher, and remedy for various aches and pains – and now it is being hailed as a possible cure for Alzheimer’s disease. So, what exactly is this ‘miracle’ treatment?
The American physician, who has been dubbed ‘Dr Coconut’ for his tireless research into coconut oil’s healing properties, now claims to have discovered the latest breakthrough in the management of Alzheimer’s and other neurological conditions.
Dr Bruce Fife presented his evidence recently at the 10th Coconut Festival in Mandaluyong City in the Philippines. In his presentation, he referred to a man suffering with progressive dementia for five years who was allegedly free of the disease after just 35 days of consuming virgin coconut oil.
The man’s wife researched the results for a new drug called AC-1202 (later known as Axona), which has an active ingredient called MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) – an oil that is used to treat epilepsy and is also placed in hospital feeding programs for newborns.
As a paediatrician, the man’s wife knew that babies need to develop their brains with the right brain foods and MCT was found in great quantities in the oil extracted from coconuts.
Intuitively, she started her husband on a feeding program. Instead of using Axona at reportedly $100 per month with one dose a day, she used coconut oil at a cost of $10 a month and gave him two tablespoons of the mixture with every meal.
Some researchers say the high amounts of saturated fat in this diet could affect blood cholesterol levels. However, Dr Fife claims tests have dispelled this notion and in fact, the man’s cholesterol levels actually improved with the good cholesterol (HDL) going up and the bad cholesterol (LDL) going down.
In 18 months, Dr Fife claimed the man’s dementia was “totally arrested”, and scored high enough in tests to be considered in the mild-range of Alzheimer’s.
Inspired by her husband’s recovery, Dr Mary Newport now travels all over America telling her story of hope and persistence. She encourages the medical scientific community to keep on with their research into the use of MCTs as a therapeutic aid in treating Alzheimer’s, as well as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and other neurodegenerative disorders.
Dr Fife claims that drugs become ineffective after some time but coconut oil helps to decrease the formation of free radicals that damage the cells; suggesting coconut oil is particularly important for those taking medications.
He also says if any food can be labelled as ‘brain food’ it would be coconut oil.
According to Dr Fife, coconut oil, acts as a “super fuel” to the brain and normalises brain function, stopping the erratic signal transmissions that lead to seizures while improving cognition and memory.
The chemical structure of the MCTs and fatty acids in coconut oil enable them to pass through the blood-brain barrier, which ordinary food or oil cannot break into.
