81 year old NSW woman facing drug charge
An 81 year old women living in Young in country NSW has been charged with growing and supplying cannabis following a series of raids by police on six properties in Young and Canberra on 12 December.
The coordinated police raids targeted an alleged drug ring which resulted in six other people being arrested, including the elderly woman’s son. The woman was charged and later released on bail and is due to appear in the Young Local Court on 5 February.
Three other elderly Australians have been charged and later convicted for drug offences in recent years. In June, 2004, 77 year old Florence Davies and her 81 year old husband David were found guilty of storing 19kg of cannabis in the ceiling of their Perth home with intent to supply.
In 2005 Vasiliki Hatzis was convicted on her 71st birthday of helping to cultivate her late husband’s large crop of cannabis, worth an estimated $45 million, on their Narrabri estate in northern NSW.
