78 year hoon driver caught in Vic

A 78 year old Victorian man celebrated the new year by allegedly clocking 170 km an hour on a country road.

Melbourne newspapers have reported the case of John Belfield, who told the police he was a skilled driver and car racer, and that he was “enjoying the feel of the road” when he was caught.

His Nissan Pulsar was impounded by police.

The police said the road was a main thoroughfare with a 100 km section but also with corners and hills, and which was used by cyclists and horse riders.

“We fail to see how a driver can be competent when they are tearing around roads at 170 km/h knowing that other drivers will not be expecting you,” the police were quoted as saying.

Previously the oldest driver to have a car impounded for speeding was a 64 year old Melbourne man who drove a Porsche at 110 km in a 60 km zone.
