73 year old surgeon graduates as MD from Melbourne University
Robert Marshall has become the oldest person on record to graduate from the University of Melbourne with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) – a postgraduate doctoral degree for medical professionals.
He first graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine in 1948, then obtained a Master in Surgery in 1955. After retiring from the operating rooms when he turned 70, he has continued to work as a consultant surgeon, and teaches postgraduate anatomy at the University of Melbourne.
He fulfilled a lifetime ambition when he wrote ‘Living Anatomy Structure as the Mirror of Function’, and successfully submitted it as an MD thesis in 2006. It won high praise from international examiners.
As well as his academic work, Dr Marshall – as he can now be known – is a keen skier, loves mountaineering and completes ‘The Times’ crossword every day.
