63 year old takes on ‘Singo’ on stud work age sacking
A 63-year-old NSW central coast farmhand sacked by his 65-year-old boss, celebrity Sydney businessman/ad man and horse owner John Singleton, for being “too old” for his work still thinks “Singo” is a “good bloke” but has taken his case to the NSW Anti-Discrimination Board.
Gary Loxley claims that John Singleton ordered him sacked from his position at the Strawberry Hill horse stud, which he held there for seven years, for being too old. He said his employment separation certificate said he was “unsuitable for this type of work”.
It was only after Gary Loxley went to his local Centrelink office to apply for unemployment benefits that he became aware of the legal position. “When I went down to Centrelink I found out it was illegal,” he said.
Since losing his job Gary Loxley has been unable to find new work. The Anti-Discrimination Board has sent a copy of the Loxley claim to John Singleton who has until 15 August to reply.
