$2.7 million boost for Qld respite care

The Bligh government has delivered a $2.7 million boost to disability respite services across Queensland.

“Queensland carers selflessly devote their time and energy to caring for family members, and we need to ensure they’re getting the support they need,” said Disability Services Minister, Annastacia Palaszczuk.

She said the extra funds would target the older carers of people with a disability, benefiting more than 200 people statewide.

“From Cairns to Coolangatta, we’re providing additional funding to 17 service providers so carers can enjoy a well-earned break.

“When I travel around Queensland carers tell me how much difference just a couple of hours respite a week would make to their lives, so this is great news for them and their families.”

Ms Palaszczuk said the extra funding would also deliver programs that help people with a disability improve their community living skills, while supporting their carers.

“This additional respite funding focuses on delivering support to older carers,” she said.

“Many older carers want their family members to be well-prepared for community living before they move into a place of their own.

“They’re often apprehensive about how their children will fare when they move out from the family home. This is all about helping to make this an easier transition for them and their children.”

Ms Palaszczuk said services receiving the funding this financial year include:

  • ARC Disability Services (Cairns) $102,009
  • Tableland Community Link Association (Tablelands) $53,253
  • Southern Star Community Services (Gold Coast) $198,286
  • Open Minds (Redlands) $135,510
  • Centacare Disability Services (Gold Coast) $196,380
  • Lifestyle Solutions (Sunshine Coast) $306,022
  • House With No Steps (Caboolture and Ipswich) $437,180
  • Blue Care (Warwick) $148,000
  • Inclusion Works (Townsville and Mackay) $244,660
  • Mental Illness Fellowship of Qld (Brisbane) $78,621
  • Help Enterprises (Brisbane ) $261,780
  • Lifestream (Brisbane) $139,999
  • YMCA (Bundaberg) $99,961
  • Town and Country Community Options (Maryborough) $71,076
  • Hub Community Network (Murgon) $35,357
  • Multicap (Rockhampton) $49,436
  • Sun Care (Rockhampton) $92,143
