A Brisbane group of aged care nurses, lawyers, financial planners, mediators and counsellors have come together to create a collaborative team to assist and advise families navigating their way through the aged care system.

Heather Hill Pathways managing director and registered nurse, Heather Hill, explained the business idea came together after talking to a number of aged care lawyers, financial planners and other professionals about the need for a holistic approach to the issues faced by families.

“You simply cannot prepare your loved one for aged care without having the legal, financial and family situation in order.

“What you end up with is an immediate fix to medical care needs and then months of anguish as everything else falls apart because the proper planning wasn’t done earlier,” Ms Hill said.

Financial adviser and aged care specialist with Bravien Financial, the financial partner with Heather Hill Pathways, Jeremy Gillman-Wells, knows from experience that aged care decisions are often complex.

“Hasty decisions made in a time of a crisis can be really expensive, both financially and emotionally,” he said.

“The value of getting qualified advice early means that hard earned wealth is protected – especially the family home, care costs are minimised and cashflow to afford care is maximised.”

Brian Herd, a partner at Carne Reidy Herd Lawyers, a law firm specialising in the area of elder law, and the legal partner with Heather Hill Pathways explained “we saw a real need for other service providers to be a part of the process before we could provide our clients with a complete solution”.

When questioned on possible conflicts of interest, Mr Herd explained, “no money changes hands between us and there is no obligation on anyone to refer their clients to other partners.

“We are in this because we want to offer the best and most complete service we can to our clients”.

Heather Hill Pathways assists families to properly address the maze of issues surrounding aged care including, nursing home placement, how to apply for nursing care at home, how to properly care for elderly parents at home, negotiating accommodation bonds and charges, aged care financial planning and much more.
