About
Tongala & District Memorial Aged Care Service Inc is a community owned not-for-profit incorporated association committed to providing quality residential aged care services focusing on a person-centred approach and supportive social and physical living and working environments.
It operates RM McHale Hostel, Koraleigh Nursing Home, Memorial Drive Retirement Village services co-located on the main Purdey Street – Memorial Drive Campus, and Deakin Village located nearby on the corner of Gooda and Torney Streets. The organisation was established in 1925 & operated the Tongala Bush Nursing Hospital. The Hospital closed in 1990 and the organisation diversified into residential aged care and retirement village services.
Tongala is known as “The Friendly Town” and is located in the Shire of Campaspe in northern Victoria, 198 kilometres north of Melbourne, 15 minutes from Kyabram and 25 minutes from Echuca. Tongala is a small rural dairying area with a history as a soldier settlement.
RM McHale Hostel
RM McHale has 40-single rooms with private ensuites and includes the special care wing catering specifically for people with Dementia. Low level and ageing in place care is provided. Twenty four hour care is provided by Personal Care Workers with access to nursing care twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.
Koraleigh Nursing Home
Koraleigh has 30 places divided into three smaller units, one of which is the Helen Macpherson Smith Wing, catering specifically for people living with dementia. Koraleigh is a high level care service with a variety of single rooms with either private or shared ensuites, and a shared two bed room with shared ensuite. Twenty four hour nursing and personal care is provided.
In October 2016 an additional six beds were added to the Helen Macpherson Smith Wing of Koraleigh as part of the refurbishment of the facility..
In December 2016 the refurbishment of Don Worke including the conversion of four-shared rooms to four-single rooms was completed.
Recreational and Social Activities
Recreational and social activities are available. There is opportunity to participate in the activity program offered at the aged care facility, including the Men’s Shed.
Numerous activities are available in the community, such as a Bowls Club, Senior Citizens Group, Historical Society, CWA, RSL and churches. There are two primary schools with intergenerational activities in place.
Volunteers
Volunteers support Tongala & District Memorial Aged Care Service in many ways, including the Auxiliary, assisting with resident activities, the Men’s Shed and bus driving.
