The Mater was originally built as a private hospital in the 1920s. The Sisters of Mercy, Bathurst, ran the small private hospital in the 1950s when the name was changed to the Mater. The hospital was transferred to nursing home status in 1978. In December 2002, the Mater transitioned to Catholic Healthcare.
A major redevelopment of the site was completed in July 2001 and the Mater now provides single rooms for all residents, in a well designed, home-like environment.
